Cross Country

Get Fit For Cross Country

Cross Country is at the end of Week 2 next term so we will be running every afternoon for the first 2 weeks!
Make sure you go for a few runs during the holidays. It's a good thing to do as a family.

If you don't do much running here's a few tips to get you started:
  • interval training is a fast way to get you fit.
  • jog lightly to warm up for 2 mins then walk 1 minute.  Repeat the intervals 2-3 times (run 2 mins, walk 1 min). Don't forget to stretch your calves, quads and hamstrings during the workout.
  • If you live in town you can use the lamp posts to mark out distances, e.g. run to one then walk to the next.
  • Gradually increase the amount of time you run for and reduce the walk time so you are  eventually running for 15 -20mins.
  • keep hydrated and stretch your muscles after they are warmed up.
  • have fun.

Science

Science Can Be Tasty!

This week for part of our fizzing and foaming topic, we tasted the ingredients in sherbet. The children tasted each of the separate ingredients and wrote about its texture, smell and taste. Here's what they said
"it's disgusting"
"it bubbles"
"it's gritty"
"it tastes sour"
"it fizzes"
"it feels like sand"
The next day we combined the ingredients to make sherbet fizz and their reactions were quite different!

Bubble Art

Science and Art

Today we combined science with art.  We coloured bubble solution with dye and blew bubbles onto paper.  As the bubbles landed they created different patterns of colour.  The children experimented with spray bottles as well. It was messy but so much fun!

Taniwha

Taniwha

We read the myth about the Taniwha of the Wellington Harbour and retold the story for our shared writing on Friday, which we illustrated together.  We have also been working on producing our wonderful Taniwhas.  We drew patterns on their bodies and coloured them in with pastels. Then we applied black PVA glue over some of the patterns and painted the sea using blue and green dye.

Persevering at maths

Maths time

We have been focusing on perseverance in the classroom.  We brainstormed what persevering at maths would look like.  Here's what we came up with...

Never give up
Keep trying
Try to solve it a different way by using a different strategies
Use different equipment to help you
Think positive thoughts like...
"I can do this"

Here are some of us persevering with our basic facts

What a fun morning!

NH90 Lands at Halcombe

All the children had a wonderful surprise this morning, when an airforce NH90 touched down on our playing fields.  The aircrew kindly gave the children a tour around the helicopter and the children got to ask questions and sit inside.
Thanks for such an exciting morning, we will be doing some exciting writing about this tomorrow!

Super Writers

Welcome back to room 1

I hope you all had a fabulous holiday and feel refreshed and ready for some great learning! Also a big welcome to Max, Blake, Cooper, Emily, Paige and Maggie who have joined us from room 7.  I look forward to a great couple of terms ahead.

Celebrating Writing

Our topic for term 3 is Perseverance.  For writing this week, we listened to the story called The Dot.  This is a delightful story about a girl who hated drawing. The book teaches us about perseverance.  We did some wonderful writing around this and here we are celebrating our writing on our Super Writer's Throne.
Awesome writing room 1!

Maths time on Thursday

Baking chocolate chip cookies

On Thursday we did some baking. We had so much fun measuring and weighing the ingredients for our cookies, but the best part was mixing and shaping them before they went in the oven.  We got to taste them straight away and they were delicious!  Thanks to our wonderful room 5 helpers Jacinta, Mataora, Blake and Bethany.

Lighthouse art

Mr Grinling's Lighthouse in mixed media.

After reading the Lighthouse Keepers Catastrophe, we created these wonderful lighthouse pictures.
We coloured our lighthouses with pastel then applied watercolour.  We created a picture frame using cardboard and collage.  We added black pva paint to add depth and dimension to our art.  They are a colourful addition to our classroom.  Awesome mixed media art room 1.

Show and Tell

We always have an awesome show and tell, but this week was extra special.  Thank you to Ben's family for kindly sharing the Wahine artifacts with us.  We saw a life jacket, news paper clippings and even the dress his Granny wore on the boat at the time of the disaster. It was fascinating.

Buddy Class

Fun with Room 5

On Thursday afternoon  we had a blast with our big buddies in room 5. We have been learning about directions in maths, so we put it to test in a game of blindfold trust.  Our big buddies gave us directions and we had to move forward, backwards, left and right.  We are pretty good at our left and rights now!
Afterwards we had a game of dodgeball.
Thanks room 5.

Boats

Researching about Boats

We have been researching all about boats.  We have been learning about how they float, famous boats and the different types of boats we will find on rivers, lakes and the sea!
We published our wonderful writing and it now sits in our library corner.
Well done room 1, fabulous research!
