Buddy class

Small ball skills with our buddy class

This afternoon we went out onto the field with our buddy class.  We did a series of different throwing and catching activities.   The room 5 buddies taught us some new skills. Thanks room 5 , we had a lot of fun.

Science

Science

In science we are looking at how the Sun affects plants. We are working in 3  groups. Each group has a plant. One plant is in a sunny place, one in is the cupboard ( our shady spot) and one is on a table in our classroom (our in between spot).  We will be measuring our plants and observing any changes over the next week.

Friday: Today we looked at shadows.  We learnt that shadows are made when we block the Sun's rays.  We took our sundials outside at 9 o'clock and marked the line where the shadow fell. We repeated this again at 12 and 2 pm.  Also we got into groups of 5 and one person was the shadow child. We drew an outline around them at 9am, 12 and 2pm.
We made some interesting observations...

"the shadows are getting smaller"
" the shadows are moving to the side"
"our shadows have moved the same way as the clocks"

We had a discussion about the relationship between the Sun's position in the sky and the shadow length.
Great learning room 2!

Gala fun

Gala

Wow , what a great day. The weather shone and the children, parents and teachers had a blast. I was supervising the magic carpet ride, which seemed to be very popular!  Here are some photos from the day.

Small ball skills

We have started small ball skills. We are practising throwing underarm and overarm and catching from different heights and distances.

Science

Learning about the Sun

We have begun our science unit on the Sun and it's role in our solar system.  We made a UV monitor chart for our classroom, and we are recording the daily UV level for rest of the year!

We did an experiment on how the Sun affects the air. We used ice and placed one container in the Sun and one in the shade. We made predictions about what would happen. We discovered the ice in the Sun melted faster than the container of ice in the shade. We concluded that the Sun warms the air.

We will be doing experiments on how plants are effected by the Sun and experiments on shadows.

rounders with our buddy class

Rounders with room 5

Last week we played a game of rounders with our buddy class.  We took turns at pitching, fielding and batting. We had a lot of fun and I can't remember if we won (pretty sure we did)!

Identifying the problem and solution in a story

Problem and solution

In writing on Thursday we watched a short animated story on the literacy shed website. Bridges is a humorous story about a bear and moose who don't get along. The bridge is too narrow for the animals to pass .  If they worked  together they could get past, however they are both stubborn and refuse to sort it out. The raccoon and the rabbit solved the problem for them. The children really enjoyed the story and after watching it, they wrote some fabulous stories.
Here we are planning our writing.

These are some  of our stories...

The bear the the moose couldn't get past each other.  The rabbit and raccoon tipped them off the bridge.
By Hannah

Once upon a time there was a moose and a bear, a raccoon and a rabbit.  The bear and moose were on the bridge and they were in each other's way and they had a big fight.  Then the raccoon and a rabbit came along and they made the bear and moose fall off the bridge.
By Caleb

The bear and moose couldn't get past each other. The raccoon came along.  The bear said to the moose " you should go back" and the moose said 'no".  The rabbit came along and the moose threw the rabbit. The rabbit and the raccoon cut the bridge and they solved the problem.

Fun in maths

Learning about probabilty

We have been learning about probability in maths. We were given a series of challenges and with our buddy we had decide whether the challenge was fair or not. We also looked at chance and whether certain things are likely to happen

.  We all enjoyed working in groups to play these games.
